Events Spotlight: August

Waves coruscating under the midday sun, shoeless frolicking in fields, ice cubes cavorting amongst herbs and citrus, gentle days and whimsical side quests. What does August mean to you?

We are officially over halfway through the year, and naturally, this past month has been a welcomed pit-stop of contemplation, a juncture to review what lies both behind you and ahead. This pivotal point of 2026 invites you to reflect on your year, realign yourself with your January intentions, and celebrate your wins.

For me, August feels like one long, uninterrupted party. It's back to back festivals, weddings and picnics plastered across the calendar. It’s butterflies bursting with colour and golden hours setting the scene. It’s fruit-laden salads paired with mocktails and a good book in the grass. It’s events like the ones below – offering kinship, inspiration, silliness, solidarity and celebration.

The season isn’t as endless as it once seemed on family camping trips, free from the clutches of the school bell. It’s a period that begs to be used to its full potential: the days are long, the evenings are warm, there are sun-dappled memories to make! So take some time to peruse the August spotlight, where we have selected the crème de la crème of what Bristol has to offer: generative community-building, collaborative artistic sessions, parties with purpose, experimental theatre, reflective literary events and so much more.

UKG for Unity: A charity night of UK Garage and good vibes

What better way to inaugurate August than with a night of garage for a good cause? This absolutely packed lineup promises five hours of UKG excellence, coupled with the comfort of knowing that your money is going to a vital cause. With all proceeds going to SARI (Stand Against Racism and Inequality), this is an opportunity to not only let loose on the dance floor to the selections of local legends, but to help support those in our city who have been targeted by hate crimes and inequality. Show up, bring your circle, engross yourself in old skool bangers and join UKG for Unity in the stand against hate.

Sober Summer Day Party

Bristol Sober Spaces and The Trinity Centre are teaming up to bring you an inclusive and joyful day rave with crafts, food, coffee, and a line-up easing you from funk and soul to dubstep and jungle. B‍ristol Sober Spaces events are for everyone and anyone who wants to come along – you don't have to be sober 24/7, just for this event. They’re all about focusing on the music and normalising night life without the drink and drugs.

There'll be a craft area with colouring and a textile workshop with Shika Otalu, a Fightklub stall, market stalls, coffee from Jacks Coffee Shack and food from Cincinnati Chilli Bomb. Sober Circle will be hosting a relaxed space for anyone who wants to connect with others in the sober community. The eclectic lineup features Aries, Anything But Becky, Any Jungle In Gals, Stone Cold Hustle, The Shake Trio, TJA, & Prime Movements

How Queer Bookshops Changed the World with AJ West

Use some time this month to expand your knowledge on the quiet champions of LGBTQIA+ liberation: queer bookshops. Find your place at Bookhaus, where AJ West and Jack Shoulder open the space for discussion, education and connection with West’s book, ‘How Queer Bookshops Changed the World’ at the heart of the conversation.

From Paris to New York, West has expertly documented the crucial role that independent bookshops have played throughout the fight for LGBTQIA+ rights, amplifying queer voices and creating a haven for safety and solidarity to blossom. And with £2 off of the book with your ticket, you can step into the month with newfound knowledge on the queer movement, and a compelling read to bring home with you!

Capturing Movement: Open Table

Commencing on the first Wednesday of each month, Capturing Movement is all about sharing projects, igniting conversations and connecting over the magic of visual storytelling.

Hosted by Bristol’s own acclaimed photojournalist Mike Simmons, Capturing Movement is political action through art and voice. It’s a chance to plummet into Simmons' 40 year old archive of social commentary, to bear witness to the power of documentary photography and to bring your own interpretations to the table. This event invites you to surround yourself with likeminded artists for the evening and even present your own works in progress. If you’re searching for discussions that resonate and images that provoke, there’s a seat at the Open Table for you.

FLINTA street photography walk

Run by photography collective SEPIA, this informal walk through Bristol City Centre is an opportunity to share ideas, make friends, try new skills and experiment with street photography.

Sepia is a safe space for anybody with any kind of interest in photography – iPhone cameras are welcome, film cameras, DSLR, toy cameras, anything goes! This is a relaxed and casual setting, prioritising whatever feels best to you: socialising, asking questions, sharing ideas, asking for feedback on previous work or on new ideas.

Making a Scene: Jam Session

Get loud, make new connections and relish in musical prowess over at Exchange’s jam session social! Whether you’re a long time musician, or just looking to let off some steam with your own instrument, there’s no doubt you will find your people here. Opening doors at 1pm, the pay what you can session is a low pressure way to practice, form connections and even get a new ensemble together (if you do, discounts will be offered on practice spaces!).

Followed by a group social at the Old Market Tavern, the afternoon is a playful adventure that blends music and friendship for those seeking a collective and a creative outlet.

Craft/Folks Craft Picnic

Bring your craft projects, your favourite blanket and your curiosity to the Downs this month, where Craft/Folks are ready to embrace you with open arms.

Founded by the artist Ana Clark Ribeiro, Craft/Folk is only just beginning its exciting journey, and it looks like one to follow. Ribeiro has been an essential figure in our city's art scene for a while, turning heads with her expertise in textile-lead self expression. Alongside her own projects, Ribeiro has dedicated her time and energy into ensuring other artists have an accessible space to connect, share what they’re working on, unwind with some food and drinks, and body double in an environment that is uplifting and inspiring.

Cherishing easy conversations and relaxed creativity, Craft/Folks is the perfect evening for those in search of a creative outlet and some soft socialization with other artistic folk. Welcoming all levels of ability, this non-judgemental space has been built to bring craft lovers together under the open sky.

Reggie Watts x CAPYAC variety show

Don’t miss out on the first evening show of the Reggie Watts x CAPYAC week long residency at The Cube Microplex – the wildly improvisational comic, musician and actor phenomena that is REGGIE WATTS and the Californian absurdly funky and trippy trio CAPYAC are here to riff with our beloved Cube.

It’s so special to see international sensations love Bristol like we do – Reggie has been a longtime returning satellite to the Cube, with the run up to this residency being years in the making – first hoped for 14 years ago, in fact!

Beat The Makers: Open Styles

Whether you already have one foot in the door of Bristol’s dynamic breakdance and hip hop community, you’re break-curious, or you simply want to watch the exclusive return of the Bristol Breakers concept battle, this will be one for the books. Both beatmakers and dancers are journeying to Watershed this month to exchange skills, perform and compete for the top spot.

Valuing empowerment and connection via music and movement, Bristol Breaking Sessions means more than crowning a winner amongst dancers and producers. It’s about encouraging self expression, forming fellowship, preserving Bristol’s hip hop scene and nurturing its growth. With a hefty lineup of producers sharing their skills for dancers to battle it out on the dancefloor, all participants have the potential to walk away with £200, or at the very least, a new home within the break community and some limited edition merch. Open for anyone to attend, grab your ticket for just over a fiver and witness the best that Bristol Breakers has to offer!

Eat Make Share: Community Meetup - Faith

MaFia Weekend create participatory storytelling events: spaces to eat food together, chat and get creative. Eat Make Share is MaFia Weekend’s answer to building a network of support and resilience in the BS5 area: these meetups provide an assortment of activities, meaningful discussions, and collective dining. Each month, they explore topics including energy, water, race, faith, identity and food. This month’s Eat Make Share pivots around Faith, exploring the topic through storytelling, workshops and creativity.

MaFia Weekend CIC are on a mission to carve out a space dedicated to sharing experiences, skills, and meals that bring Bristol together, and their success has been palpable. Putting local voices first, Eat Make Share is a continuous celebration of the rich tapestry of culture that can be found within our city.

Short film screening – BRICKS

Discover the incredible filmmaking talent on your doorstep at the Homegrown Cinema Showcase, an evening celebrating independent films made here in the South West.

In collaboration with South West Independent Film (SWIF), each screening showcases work by local filmmakers, who'll be coming to charity and arts space BRICKS to introduce their films, share the stories behind them, and answer your questions.

Enjoy a thoughtfully curated programme of short films, and stay afterwards for conversation with filmmakers, neighbours, and fellow film lovers. Whether you're passionate about cinema or simply curious to discover new local talent, everyone is welcome.
